The iconic medium for sitting.
An architect that received no formal training, Mies van der Rohe learned his trade from local architects, including Peter Behrens. He loved the beauty of materials, particularly stone. Onyx and travertine were used in the German Pavilion he designed for the World’s Fair in Barcelona. The Barcelona chair was also used in the building. The cushion is covered with twenty separate leather pieces that have been welted, biscuit tufted, and buttoned. It is attached to the frame with leather straps.
