Railtones Isn’t the Coolest Speaker System Ever, But It’s Pretty Damn Close

Unless you pony up for a whole-house audio system, traditional speakers with visible wires are necessary in today’s high-tech, home theater, surround-sound world. Instead, this speaker system mounts to track lighting to help you cut the cord (and discord). Manufactured by Tech Lighting in partnership with its sister brand LBL Lighting, railtones’ wireless speakers mount to the companies’ low-voltage track lighting (or to many other brands). A wireless transmitter plugs into almost any audio device, including a computer’s USB port, an iPod or iPhone,  MP3 player, receiver, stereo or television…and voila!…HD music or NPR. To help you raise the roof (and piss off your neighbors), the company includes an infrared remote control for volume. Railtones isn’t the best solution for whole-house audio, and it’s not exactly cheap—a kit costs about $600—but when you consider that you get two wireless speakers (in black or white), one wireless transmitter, one remote control, and four pre-set equalizer options it’s not a bad deal.
